Mock Trial Competition features Rancho Cucamonga

The 35th San Bernardino County Mock Trial Competition began November 1 and will continue on for several weeks, and one of the locations will be at the Foothill Law and Justice Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

High school students from Rancho Cucamonga High School are among the approximately 375 San Bernardino County students participating in the People v. Awbrey, a fictionalized real case. The students play the parts of prosecutors, defenders, witnesses, and other courtroom roles.

This year’s case features a restaurant owner on trial for false imprisonment and human trafficking regarding an immigrant employee. However, the defendant’s incriminating statement, an important part of the evidence against him, occurred during a police stop that may have been illegal.

Students participating in the Mock Trial, as well as their families, have several important dates marked on their Calendars. After four scheduled competition dates, the Mock Trial Teams will be whittled down to four semifinalists who will compete at the San Bernardino County Justice Center on December 6 and 7. The finals will also take place in San Bernardino and are scheduled for December 10. State competition will take place in the spring for county winners.

The 35th San Bernardino County Mock Trial Competition is being jointly sponsored by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s and the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools.
