Preparation for an annual event in Placerville will get underway next month.
Placerville Art on Parade is a nonprofit organization that has hosted a community art festival for the past 13 years. For the first two years, the event focused on wheelbarrows and wine barrels; however, the last 11 years’ events have been all about Banners.
The festival is a collaboration between the nonprofit and local artists, citizens, business, and government. Its purpose is to promote tourism to historic Placerville through art. According to Art on Parade’s website, it is among the longest running community-based art projects in all of California.
Banners are painted by local artists and displayed on light poles along Placerville’s Main Street, where they stay from June until October. In total, the event has seen 335 Banners on display since its inception. Brochures for a walking tour are available from participating businesses and online from Placerville Art on Parade, and mementoes such as Posters, magnets, and bookmarks are available for visitors to order.
Each year’s entries are available to see online, along with an informational blurb about that year’s events. Last year’s festival is also available to view as a virtual tour. The art pieces are available for sale when the exhibit ends, and, along with other fundraising initiatives, help pay for the next year’s display.
The event is volunteer-run and dependent on sponsors, so people looking to contribute on either of those fronts can find out more on the website.
