The Gold Rush
Placerville is famous in American history because of the discovery of gold at nearby Sutter’s Mill in 1848. The event set off the California Gold Rush, and although the first gold was found in Coloma, a nearby town, Placerville soon became known as a center for the mining operations in the region. It offered numerous services for the miners including transportation to move both goods and people, banking, and lodging. It also boasted a general store and a market. Today, several buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Romani built a clay track around the edge of the fairground’s football field. On June 18, 1965, the first ever auto race was held here, at what was called “Hangtown Speedway.”
Today, the speedway celebrates more than 50 years of continuous operation, and is one of the most successful, as well as one of the oldest, racing locations in California. Once thought of as a local Saturday night event venue, Placerville Speedway is recognized nationwide as being one of the most important tracks in dirt track auto racing.
