In days gone by, raising sheep was an important part of the economy of Petaluma and the surrounding areas, and the public is invited to an event where they will learn more about these animals, how they were cared or, and more.
Petaluma Adobe will be hosting its annual Sheep Shearing Day. Those who come out will have an opportunity to watch demonstrations from shearer John Sanchez as he goes about his task of trimming the sheep’s outer fleece. He will show both modern and historic methods so people can see how the two compare. Those who organize an event such as this can use postcard printing to create materials that can promote it throughout the local area and further afield as well.
Once the wool has been removed, attendees will be able to try their hand at carding it and spinning it into yarn using the techniques that would have been commonly used in the early 1800s. At that time, sheep were an important part of local ranching, as they provided wool for farm and home use, as well as for trade and export.
