The Santa Rosa Firefighters Local 1401 has run the ‘Toys for Kids’ toy drive for almost 30 years. This year, over 5,000 kids from families in need throughout the area have requested assistance with gifts, but the firefighters have only collected about 1,000 toys so far.
Tony Niel, a firefighter with the group, stressed:
“We are in desperate need.”
While many fundraisers, drives and charitable events are conducted throughout the year, the holidays especially seem to see an increase in these types of activities. Organizers of such events often raise awareness throughout the community about the activity through a variety of means, including flyer printing and poster printing.
Collection barrels for toy donations are located at the front of every Rincon Valley and Santa Rosa fire station. The firefighters are also accepting cash donations with which they can purchase gifts matching the kids’ requests. Local stores and retailers provide a discount to the firefighters on these purchases. Those wishing to make a cash donation can do at a booth set up in the Santa Rosa Plaza until December 22. Firefighters will be at the booth from 12:00 pm until 8:00 pm each day.
