Alcatraz Island is perhaps best known for being the site of a prison, but is also home to a wide variety of seabirds. These will be the focus of a virtual presentation on offer in Oakland this month.
Lidia D’Amico, who is a biologist with the National Park Service, will be working with seabird biologist Zoe Burr to introduce the public to the species found on Alcatraz. There is no cost to participate, and it may help the registrants gain a deeper understanding and respect for the other creatures who call the area home.
The presentation will discuss the species using the island as a site to breed and raise a family, and one of these is the Brandt’s cormorants. The participants will learn about the threats faced by local seabirds due to urban expansion and climate change. The factors that make Alcatraz special will be reviewed and the hope is that when the presentation has drawn to a close, the attendees will have a greater appreciation of wildlife, what it needs to survive, and also what they can do to help.
Offering the public a chance to be part of an activity like this is one way to help spread the word about species at risk and what can be done to help them. Print shops will be able to design and prepare any visual materials the facilitators need for such an occasion.
This opportunity for citizen scientists to learn about local birds has been scheduled for Thursday, May 20, starting at 7:00 pm.
