The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) has awarded the Newport Beach Police Department a grant of $300,000 to create a program of public awareness efforts and special enforcements.
The funding will be used by the Police Department as part of the ongoing efforts of the city to keep roadways safe and improve the quality of life through both education and enforcement.
Sergeant Michael Schiavi said that the grant will allow the department to cover many areas, ranging from distracted driving, to the safety of pedestrians on and around the area’s roads.
He added that the department is dedicated to addressing these issues, most of which are not new ones, and to intervene before accidents happen. The grant money will allow for an increase in the number of officers able to patrol the roadways and educate the public.
Director of the OTS, Rhonda Craft, said that traffic crashes are usually caused by unsafe behavior, so the grant focuses on the most effective ways to change these behaviors—enforcement and education. With assistance from the Office of Traffic Safety, the Newport Beach Police Department will be able to keep the streets of the city safe, she believes.
