Laguna Niguel Lake is now being operated by the county, and as a result, there is no fee for fishing there.
As of November 1, former operator Rick Mendoza’s lease was no longer in effect. It expired on October 31 and was not renewed. Now that the county has taken over the lake’s operations, there are a number of changes that have come into effect.
Those who are 16 years and over are required to have a state fishing license, but no longer must have a local permit. Additionally, only shoreline fishing is permitted; private watercraft is not allowed. Locations where fishing licenses can be obtained close to Laguna Niguel Regional Park are the Alicia Parkway locations of Walmart and Sport Chalet.
Fishing is allowed from 7:00 am until the park closes or sunset, depending on which happens first. In fall and winter, the park closes at 6:00 pm and in spring and summer it closes at 9:00 pm. Print companies can assist the county in not only informing the public of the park’s hours, but the fishing hours and rules too.
The first stocking date under the lake’s new management is expected to be November 24. This date is, however, dependent on the issuance of a stocking permit for OC Parks by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Restocking will occur every two weeks during trout season, which is set to commence in January.
