An upcoming workshop in Concord will teach attendees how to make their own river table and promises to be interesting and fun.
A river table is made by using epoxy to fill the cracks between the edges of pieces of wood, giving the surface the appearance of a river. Students will learn how to prepare the slabs, build molds, control leaks, mix, tint, and pour epoxy, and clamp the wood. They will return at a second session to unmold the tables, then plane and sand them to a lustrous finish. The finished tables will be approximately ¾” by 12” by 16”.
Although prior experience is not strictly necessary, organizers suggest that anyone unfamiliar with woodworking should consider taking the Level 1 Power Tool Safety class before attending the river table session. Organizers of this type of event could use flyer printing to create instruction sheets.
Organizers plan to have safety measures in place to keep everyone safe. First, the class is small to enable social distancing. Second, before and after each class, all the tools, seating areas, and classrooms are cleaned and sanitized. Hand sanitizer will also be available. Masks will be used in compliance with current local regulations, and gloves will be provided. People should not wear loose clothing, open-toed shoes, long sleeves, or have their hair loose.
The class will be held at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware on Treat Boulevard, from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm this Saturday, August 14. Attendees must be at least 18 years old.
