Concord could have a new resident, if the owners of a pig found wandering through the city do not claim her soon.
The potbellied pig is a female, brown and black in color, who was discovered as she munched her way through residents' lawns. Animal services officers found the pig on Andrews Drive after someone reported seeing her rooting around the grass.
Steve Burdo, speaking on behalf of Contra Costa Animal Services, said the agency has been trying to talk to the owner, leaving messages and notes on their door, but has yet to receive a response. If no one claims the as yet unnamed pig within the holding period, she will be eligible for adoption. Burdo says that if the little sow generates a great deal of interest, Animal Services might hold an auction.
Thanks to celebrities such as singer Miley Cyrus, who has a pig; and LiLou, a therapy pig who works at San Francisco International Airport, more and more people are choosing these animals as pets. Pigs are intelligent creatures with a voracious appetite, and as a result, an increasing number have been showing up in urban areas. One was recently spotted wandering around South San Francisco.
In situations like this, if no home is found for the animal, officials might consider working with a flyer printing company to create a mailer announcing the auction.
