New chief firefighter appointed in Concord

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District—or ConFire for short—has a new chief.

A change-of-command ceremony was held recently in Concord, at which time Deputy Fire Chief Lewis Broschard was promoted to the rank of chief. He will be replacing Chief Jeff Carman, who has held the position for over five years. Organizers can use banner printing to create decorations for events like this.

Incoming Chief Broschard had his new badge “pinned” on by Alyce, his wife, and was then sworn in as the chief of ConFire, one of the biggest fire districts in the state. Chief Broschard is the 12th person to head the district. The ceremony, which was attended by Karen Mitchoff, the Contra Costa County Fourth District Supervisor, and John Gioia, the First District Supervisor, marked the official transfer of leadership.

The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District was formed in December 1964, when the Mt. Diablo Fire Protection District merged with the Central Fire Protection District. Mt. Diablo included Station 9, located in Pacheco; Station 11, located in Clayton; West Pittsburgh's Station 7; and Concord's Stations 6, 8, and 10. Central consisted of Pleasant Hill's Stations 2 and 5; and three stations in Walnut Creek (1, 3, and 4).

A fire district differs from a fire department in that the latter is usually a unit of government of a city, town, or village, while a district operates largely to provide protection to larger, rural, or unincorporated areas.
