Concord volunteers make Thanksgiving happier for the needy

For needy families in Concord, Thanksgiving this year was a good day, thanks to the generosity of both individuals and companies in the community.

The Monument Crisis Center distributed 1,000 turkeys to seniors and low-income families on November 21, with help from a number of volunteers, including Kimberly Alessi and her husband Anthony of San Diego.

Anthony is originally from Concord, and he and Kimberley returned to his hometown last year to help distribute meals, only to find that the center’s funds were depleted and no turkeys were to be distributed. Alessi, who is a Navy SEAL, resolved to help the center this year, and in October, gave the center $1,000 to start buying turkeys so people would not be disappointed again.

Ohers heard about Alessi’s donation, and they too chipped in. Concord’s Las Montañas Supermarket donated 250 birds to the effort, while service organizations and local businesses contributed money and time. Around 50 volunteers were on hand to distribute the meals, making Thanksgiving a little brighter for the less fortunate.

The center gives away about 1,500 Boxes of produce and pantry staples monthly, but tries to include a turkey around the holidays. Having the traditional meal gives recipients a sense of normalcy, according to center director Sandra Scherer.

Organizations like this can benefit by working with flyer printing companies, which can create mailers for the local area, describing special events and asking for volunteers.
