In 2016, Dunkin' Donuts opened a store in the Bay Area—the first time it had done so in years. Now, it is set to open in the area again, this time in Concord, and with a new concept and a new name. The store will simply be called Dunkin'.
Although the chain is usually thought of as a donut shop, Matt Cobo, who is the franchisee of the new Concord location, said the company sells a great deal of coffee, and is thinking in terms of competing for the coffee market against companies like Starbucks, rather than against other pastry makers.
The concept to be unveiled in Concord will be modeled after the first Dunkin’, which the company opened in Quincy, Massachusetts. The Quincy store features espresso machines where coffee drinks can be made to order, and a system of taps that serve iced tea and cold-brew coffee. The store has digital kiosks where patrons can place orders, whether a crew member is there to help or not. Members of the company's rewards program have the option of ordering their food and drink using a mobile app and picking it up in a special area. The Dunkin' system is similar to the mobile app programs Starbucks uses, which has been very successful. The location should open in summer this year.
