Lyft, the ridesharing company based in San Francisco, recently announced it will partner with the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) to develop its self-driving vehicles.
The testing will take place in Concord at GoMentum Station, a facility the CCTA manages. GoMentum Station is a proving ground that provides 5,000 acres of space for testing vehicles.
Luc Vincent of Lyft said the company believes in self-driving cars, which he thinks will make driving accessible to everyone and safer for all. He added that teaming up with CCTA to use the proving ground will enable Lyft to test their systems in secure surroundings, and advance their technology efficiently.
In 2017, Lyft said it planned to build a self-driving system in Palo Alto, at its Level 5 Engineering Center. The self-driving vehicles developed in Palo Alto will then be tested further in Concord.
CCTA uses GoMentum Station when it works with public agencies, researchers, technology companies, and equipment and auto makers to create the next innovations in transportation. In the past, GoMentum has worked with German manufacturing giant Mercedes-Benz to test traffic signals that are able to “communicate” with vehicles. In 2014, the CCTA said it would start testing self-driving technology at the station.
At the end of testing sessions such as this, companies might consider working with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for wide distribution, discussing the new developments in their industry.
