Concord recognized for its tree maintenance

The United States Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation has recently named the City of Concord as ‘Tree City USA’ for the 34th year in a row, and given it the Growth Award for the 17th year in a row.

There are four core standards of managing forestry in a city which a community needs to meet in order to achieve the status of Tree City USA. These are maintaining a specific department for trees, spending at least $2 per person on urban forestry, having a tree ordinance, and celebrating Arbor Day.

Indeed, Arbor Day will be celebrated with two events. City staff and a Girl Scout Troop and Cub Pack from Woodside Elementary will plant four Chitalpa trees, which are drought-tolerant, at BART Park this afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

This will be followed by a Helping Hands Service Day project, where volunteers and staff from the City will plant an additional four Chitalpa trees at Hillcrest Community Park on Saturday April 25, beginning at 8:00 am.

The Chitalpa trees will need to be watered during their first three years until they establish themselves, but then they will no longer need watering.

The city may be turning to flyer printing companies to help with the printing of Flyers and other materials about the recent awards and the upcoming events.
