Lovers of jazz music should plan to be in Concord this weekend for a festival dedicated to their favorite genre of music.
Live Nation and Concord Jazz are partnering to put on the 50th Anniversary Concord Jazz Festival. The first festival was held in 1969 in a city park, and was the beginning of the Concord Jazz record label. Concord Jazz has remained committed to the music ever since, as reflected in the lineup of musicians playing this year.
Artists featured for the 2019 festival include the Chick Corea Spanish Heart Band, Esperanza Spalding, Dave Koz & Friends Summer Horns, Poncho Sanchez & his Latin Jazz Band, and The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra. Carmen Bradford, Jamison Ross, and Patti Austin are featured artists with the Basie Orchestra, which will be performing a “Celebrating Ella” set.
Live Nation Northern California's Aaron Siuda notes that this event was held at the Concord Pavilion for many years, and his organization is delighted to bring it back for the 50th anniversary. John Burk, the president of Concord Records, notes that when Carl Jefferson created the festival in 1969, it inspired him to launch his Concord Jazz label.
The Jazz Festival takes place tomorrow, August 3, at the Concord Pavilion, with the doors opening at 2:00 pm, and the main stage performances starting at 4:00 pm. Poster printing is often used to publicize events like this, as concertgoers enjoy have mementos of the experience.
