Concord becomes home to new sport

The new pickle ball courts will be opening to the public later this month in Concord.

Pickle ball is played on a court similar in size to those used for badminton, with a plastic whiffle ball and a large paddle like that used in ping-pong. It is designed to be a low-impact paddle sport, with straightforward rules and created for people of all ages and skill levels to enjoy.

Concord Parks and Recreation decided to create the pickle ball courts after it offered classes two years ago, with the demand increasing ever since. Four tennis courts at Willow Pass Community Park were resurfaced and repainted to create fourteen new courts for pickle ball.

According to Steve Voorhies, Director of Parks and Recreation for Concord, this is now one of the largest complexes for pickle ball in Northern California. A league is planned for the fall, and the Senior Games Encore Tournament will be held at the courts in November.

The Department might benefit from the assistance of a local printing company to promote the new courts to teams from all over the Bay Area, and to families in Concord looking for an enjoyable new means of recreation.

The grand opening ceremony will be held at 9:00 am on Saturday, September 17 at the Willow Pass Community Park. After the ceremony, there will be free giveaways, demonstrations by local players, and activities for all age groups on the courts.
