Concord asks people to play Santa for seniors

A number of Concord organizations, including the Concord Senior Center, the Concord Commission on Aging, and the HomeInstead Senior Care office are teaming up with nonprofit organizations, residents, and businesses to coordinate the Be a Santa to a Senior (BASTAS) program.

The program provides gifts to seniors, as well as spending time with them. Some are in difficult financial circumstances, and many are alone, making the holidays a difficult time for them.

The chair of the Commission on Aging, Melvin Lee, said that last year, the effort helped more than 300 people. He is encouraging everyone to get involved this year by visiting businesses that are supporting the program.

To take part, all one has to do is find a BASTAS tree at a participating store, and take a gift tag from it. The tag is labeled with the first name of a senior, and what they would like to receive for Christmas. The person can then buy the present and return it, unwrapped, along with the tag, to the store by December 10, 2017.

Participating stores include the Deutscher Family YMCA, the Concord Police Department, the Concord Civic Center, the Old Spaghetti Factory, Curves for Women, Min's Kitchen, and the Concord Senior Center. There is also a present-wrapping party at the center from 9:00 until 11:00 am on December 16.

Organizers of efforts like this could work with a flyer printing company on a mailer for the widest possible distribution.
