The Concord City Council recently agreed to spend over $450,000 to provide new vehicles, and software upgrades of its radio communications equipment, to the police department.
The total amount includes over $325,000 that will be used to purchase 10 new Police Interceptors, manufactured by the Ford Motor Company.
Bids to supply the 10 cruisers ranged from $325,250 to $330,240, with one coming in $50 lower than the vendor who won the contract. However, the city stipulates that local vendors should be given preference. Officials dealing with matters like this could use flyer printing to let residents know of the improvements.
According to city staff members, there are a total of 271 vehicles in the fleet currently, each of which has to be replaced at the end of its useful life, which may be anything from six to ten years. Replacing the vehicles regularly saves money, and means those in the fleet are always in good condition. This year, 30 vehicles will be replaced.
The additional money will be used to upgrade Concord’s Motorola radio network. The bulk of the funds go to pay licensing fees for the software ($99,519), with another $18,450 earmarked for upgrading the radios themselves. There are 383 radios in use in the system, and 369 will need to be upgraded by the end of June, 2020, to remain in communication with those of other area agencies that have already upgraded their equipment.
