The “Rocket City” of Huntsville, Alabama, got its nickname because of its close association with rocketry and the space industry. In 1941, during World War II, the U.S. Army built the Huntsville Arsenal, the Gulf Chemical Warfare Depot, and the Redstone Ordnance Plant near the city. When the war ended in 1945, the facilities were combined and redesignated Redstone Arsenal. The Redstone Rocket was named for the facility where it was developed, and it was a descendent of the Redstone, the Jupiter-C, that put Explorer 1, the United States’ first satellite, into orbit.
