Proposals made for changes to school calendar

Some parents in the Valley school districts have raised concerns that proposed changes to the school calendar will have adverse effects on the time they have with their children.

The Alabama Association of School Boards has put together a website that states that an upcoming bill aims to make it so that all of the public school districts will follow a single calendar. Banner printing could be used to show support or opposition for upcoming bills. This particular bill has yet to be filed, however the website says:

“We’re hearing the tourism and summer camp industries are going to push hard and soon this legislative session for a longer summer by requiring the school year start after Labor Day and end before Memorial Day.”

If such a change is made, it is likely that the Fall Break and other days off may be sacrificed. The bill has received support from Senator Sam Givhan, Elisa Ferrel who is a member of the Huntsville School Board, and several other senators who are believed to be supporting it but have yet to do so publicly.

Sheffield City Schools have already agreed to the resolution and Madison City Schools are scheduled to follow suit, whereas Madison County Schools plan to oppose the bill. Representatives from Huntsville City Schools will make a formal opposition to the bill when the board next meets.
