New specifics added to Alabamas left-lane driving law

A bill has just passed in the Alabama Senate which makes it a misdemeanor to drive in the left lane of interstate highways without overtaking another vehicle.

The bill is called the ‘Anti-Road Rage Act’. For the first two months from the date when the bill becomes law, traffic officers will only be able to issue warnings for drivers who are caught violating it. A few exceptions apply, such as when driving in construction zones.

Experienced drivers will know that it is already a law that slow drivers must drive on the right. The new bill makes this law clearer and adds specifics that make it easier to follow and enforce. The Alabama Department of Transport will use banner printing and new road Signs on the junctions to towns such as Huntsville in order to inform drivers of the updated legislation when they enter the interstate. Drivers will only be allowed to drive on the leftmost lane for 1.5 miles without overtaking another car.

The bill was passed in response to a study ran by AAA which showed that 80% of drivers feel angry and become aggressive when slow drivers in the left lane refuse to move over. The same study also showed that drivers who are moving up to 10mph slower in the left lane force fast drivers to weave through the lanes, which is directly responsible for about 10% of accidents on the highway.
