Huntsville hires new city planner

Armon Irones, who has always been interested in managing land-use, has a new position as Huntsville’s city planner.

This puts him in the position to steer Huntsville’s growth over the next few years. He will be replacing Janet Riley, who recently announced her retirement.

Irones graduated from Alabama A&M University and will no doubt now be updating his Business Cards as he looks forward to serving Huntsville. In a statement, he said:

“As a child, I was always fascinated with geography and how people live across the country. But, as I got older, I wondered why some neighborhoods were constructed in certain areas that may have had negative environmental impacts on the community.”

Over the course of his 15-year career, Irones has worked for Houston, Pearland, and Pasadena where he oversaw acquisitions of public land. Irones' appointment in Hunstville comes in the middle of Interstate 45’s expansion which will increase the demand for family housing and commercial activity in the area.

His plan is to make sure that as Huntsville experiences growth, it maintains its identity as much as possible without losing the small-town feel that attracts people here.

Irones is already familiar with the challenging zoning laws in Huntsville having worked as Pasadena’s senior planner. Although Pasadena has fewer examples of zoning than Huntsville, the land-use ordinances were similar.
