GE Aviation to open two facilities in Huntsville

GE Aviation recently announced that it will invest $200 million building two factories in Huntsville, creating 300 jobs in the process.

The announcement was made at the Alabama State Capital by Sanjay Correa, vice-president of GE Aviation while in the company of Governor Bentley and other leaders both state and local. According to Correa, Huntsville was chosen for a number reasons: its treatment of business that choose to locate here has historically been accommodating, it has a workforce compatible with GE’s needs and its location is convenient.

The Huntsville factories will be adjacent to each other near the intersection of Greenbrier Road and Interstate 565. One factory will create ceramic fiber from silicon carbide (SiC). The second will take the ceramic fiber to manufacture unidirectional CMC Tape required to make CMC components. The CMC components will be used by GE Aviation in its land-based gas turbines and jet engines.

Like any addition to the business community, GE Aviation’s inclusion will raise Huntsville’s profile. This is especially true when promotional materials provided to printing services include the fact that once in operation the Huntsville will be one of only two in the world involved in large-scale manufacturing of SiC ceramic fiber.

Pay is expected to average $49,000 pulse benefits for the 300 workers at the two plants. Production will begin in 2018.
