The plant is located in Huntsville and employs more than 1,000 workers, but it was forced to shut down along with all of Toyota’s other plants around the country in a bid to stop the spread of COVID-19. The plant in Huntsville is restarting operations so that it can produce face shields that will be used by healthcare workers.
The company released a statement saying:
“With our plant idled, Toyota Alabama is eager to continue our expertise and know-how to help quickly bring to market the equipment needed to combat COVID-19. Toyota is continuously looking for ways to support local organizations with essential supplies.”
Toyota stated that the plant will be able to produce 7,500 facial shields and 160 pairs of safety glasses, all of which will be donated to local hospitals. Corporate Gifts and donations such as this are ideal for the local community.
Huntsville’s engine plant manufactures about 33% of all engines Toyota builds in the US. The plant was able to produce more than 600,000 engines in 2018. This particular plant is the only one of Toyota’s plants worldwide that is able to produce 8-cylinder, 6-cylinder and 4-cylinder engines at the same location.
Construction on this plant began in 2001. Since then, it has been expanded seven times and the latest expansion plans to increase the plant’s production capacity to 900,000 units per year by the end of next year.
