Planned convention centre in Newport gets the go-ahead

A scheme to build a venue for conventions within the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport has been granted planning permission, ensuring that construction work can begin in 2016.

Once built, the Wales International Convention Centre is set to have a 4,000-person capacity, which will give it the status of the biggest such venue in the whole of south west England and Wales.

A meeting was held recently to reach a final decision over the project, with the planning committee from Newport Council giving the in-depth proposals its backing.

The construction process, which should take three years to complete, will lead to the creation of over 200 jobs ,while approximately 250 are expected to be available within the centre once it launches.

It is also likely to have knock-on benefits for other businesses in the area, such as Stationery printers in Newport, which will be needed to supply materials for the business conventions being held there.

The venue is set to consist of a main auditorium, which will provide seating for 1,500 delegates, a further hall for exhibitions, 13 rooms for meetings, an entrance plaza and several outdoor terraces. Plans for the project were initially unveiled almost two years ago, and it received preliminary planning permission during the summer of last year, but now work can start.

It is hoped that the facility will be ready to open at some point in 2019.
