Newport to host Rising Festival

The Newport Rising Festival Weekend will be held in the city early next month.

The event commemorates and remembers the sacrifices of the Chartists in order to advance the cause of democracy in Newport in 1839. They are honoured by a range of Chartist-inspired activities that include performance, film, music and the spoken word. A torchlit march through the streets following in their footsteps is to be the highlight of the weekend.

This parade constitutes will take place on 2nd November starting at 5pm from Belle Vue tea rooms, which is close to the original site. Those assembled will light their rechargeable torches and march down Stow Hill proceeding towards the Westgate Hotel, in the accompaniment of drummers, street performances and song.

The march can be observed from various locations throughout the city centre. There will also be street food and entertainment, with activities spread over several days and will include the annual Chartist Convention. It provides an opportunity to learn more about the history of Chartism and the significant role that Newport played in the history of the movement. There is much to both see and do.

This event is free. Flyer printing can be used to advertise public occasions such as these.

The Newport Rising Festival will take place between Friday 1st November and Sunday 3rd November, at several locations around the city of Newport.
