The singer-songwriter Otis Gibbs is on tour, and is due to play Newport at the beginning of June.
This musician and storyteller hails from Indiana, but lived in East Nashville for 12 years. Comparisons made by fans and critics have been drawn with Steve Earle or even Bob Dylan, but his social conscience places him more readily in the company of Woody Guthrie.
Gibbs is recognised for having planted 7,176 trees, as well as reportedly having lost a wrestling match to a bear. Given the epithet “The best unknown songwriter in music today”, he modestly regards himself as a simple folk singer.
With seven self-released LPs, the most recent being 2014's 'Souvenirs of a Misspent Youth', he is also the host of a podcast 'Thanks for Giving a Damn', featuring industry insiders who are willing to share their career memories. Its cult popularity led to him becoming the host of 'Country Built on Pandora (USA)'. Here, Gibbs discusses the genre's history, and the show has more than three million subscribers.
The support, on this occasion, will be provided by the Welsh-based innovative indie folk band Louise and the Feathers.
