Recycling firm joins effort to keep Cardiff clean

A new campaign to stop people dropping chewing gum on the streets was launched in Cardiff recently.

As part of the initiative, a number of new bins have been installed around the Welsh capital by recycling company Gumdrop. Local authorities are hoping the bins will encourage residents and visitors to the city to think twice before littering the pavement.

The discarded pieces will also be recycled to create new plastic bins once the campaign begins to spread.

Ashley Govier, the Cabinet member for the environment, spoke about the initiative, saying:

"Gumdrop bins are a great idea and will greatly enhance the options for people who need to get rid of their gum.

"The fact this waste can be recycled by Gumdrop is a fantastic bonus and hopefully it will prompt people to think before they drop."

The bins are supported by a series of Signs explaining what happens to the gum once it has been thrown away. In order to maximise their effect, the Signs have been professionally produced using full colour printing.

Cardiff Council spends a significant portion of its yearly budget on removing discarded chewing gum from the streets and officials hope that the new Gumdrop bins will lead to significant savings on the clean-up operations. This money can then be spent elsewhere.

While the campaign has only launched on a trial basis, if it is successful, the government is expected to begin planning for a national roll-out at some point next year.
