New flats to be built in Cardiff

With Cardiff City Council having officially granted permission for a project to build new flats in the city to go ahead, the Wharf pub is set to be knocked down to make way for them.

The building firm that will be constructing the flats, JR Smart, made a written application to secure the permission needed for the demolition of the pub itself, as well as the boatshed and the manager’s flat. The company confirmed that it will assume responsibility for the removal of rubbish and debris before the beginning of construction work.

Work will get underway in the next few days and will carry on throughout July and the first two weeks in August. The interior of the Wharf will be completely stripped out ahead of the actual demolition.

The Wharf pub, which is located in Schooner Way, officially closed its doors during June. The company that owns it, Brains, was initially reluctant to take this course of action, but Scott Waddington, its chief executive, told Wales Online that the firm had eventually decided to concentrate on its numerous other business concerns.

The new development will consist of homes for 185 people, in addition to a coffee outlet and shop.

Once these have been completed, it is possible that places offering leaflet printing may be required, to help get the word out about them to people.
