Lecturer wins poster design competition

A lecturer from the University of Glamorgan has won first prize in a competition to design a rugby-inspired advertising poster for brewery company SA Brains.

Chris Callow, a lecturer in animation, special effects and video, designed a poster after seeing a competition appealing for designs on SA Brains' Facebook page to celebrate the Six Nations rugby tournament.

Chris commented on winning the competition in a recent interview with Wales Online. He said:

“Welsh rugby is important to Welsh people, but to me rugby is everything. The brief was celebrating Welsh rugby, and the fact that people have been enjoying that made me feel a bit more part of it all.

“I just came across this really nice image of two people sitting in what looked like a working men’s club, sitting back to back. I thought it would be funny if I replaced the faces with Gatland and Howley.”

The brand manager at SA Brains spoke about the competition, saying:

“The spoof advert competition is a great way to interact with our consumers and enhance the ‘more positive thinking’ theme that embodies the Brains brand.”

The company also said that it had seen a great response to the challenge and the entries had kept staff amused for weeks.
SA Brains is now looking into ways to bring the design to life, such as using local firms to produce physical Copies using poster printing.

Cardiff was the host of the recent Six Nations game between England and Wales, to which Chris won tickets for his effort.
