The Spanish flamenco guitarist, Juan Martin, who is on his ‘Roots Unearthed’ tour in the UK, is due to give a concert in Cardiff in mid-January.
This native of Andalucia began playing guitar as a teenager in local fiestas, honing his flamenco skills. A professional by the age of 17, Juan featured in the movie ‘Donde tu estés’ and acted as an accompaniment to singers notably Antonio Canillas and Manolo Gafas.
He subsequently moved to Madrid and was influenced by the guitarist Niño Ricardo but also studied under Paco de Lucía. This marked the start of his successful solo career and recognition both as a composer and recording artist.
Juan has performed worldwide including at the USA's First World Guitar Congress, the Montreux Jazz Festival, and the Hong Kong Festival. Guitar Player magazine named him as a top flamenco guitarist two years in succession.
In total, he has released some 20 albums, including the Moorish-inspired Musica Alhambra in 1998 as well as publishing a guide to learning the instrument, El Arte Flamenco de la Guitarra. Juan has recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and played with musicians such as Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis.
