This will see private companies working alongside the university to develop spin-out firms, with the in-depth planning application for this part of the project having now been received by planners at Cardiff City Council. When the Innovation Campus is finally finished, it will see the campus at the university cover 65,000 square metres.
The actual Innovation Campus itself, for which all funding is now in place, is set to occupy around 23,000 square metres and be spread across two separate buildings. The first of these, called the Haydn Ellis Building, was completed three years ago. Phase two of the project saw its grand opening two months ago.
Phase three is set to incorporate a number of amenities alongside the second building – including a new bridge between Colum Place and Maindy Road, car parks, open spaces for the general public, creative spaces and cafés.
Colin Riordan, Cardiff University’s vice-chancellor, told Wales Online:
“Backing cutting edge science and innovation is at the heart of our long-term plan to support Welsh people at every stage of their lives.”
