While she has only been playing guitar and singing in public for two years, Krystal Mills is now in the second stage of the selection process.
The 20-year-old gave up hairdressing to become a busker after winning a karaoke contest.
For two months last year, her debut track, Waiting For You, was the UK’s number one single from an unsigned artist.
Speaking to BBC Wales, her mother Sharon, who is also her manager, said:
"It just doesn't seem real somehow. Krystal had never shown any interest in music before winning that competition – she'd certainly never written or performed a song of her own but the confidence that gave her has unlocked something amazing.”
A number of countries that compete in Eurovision, including Turkey and Hungary, accept applications from non-nationals.
For Krystal, the next stage of the process is a fortnight of online voting. The polls are open until November 18, after which the 10 songs with the most votes will be performed as part of a live programme.
In music competitions, or even shows held to drum up public support, artists and their managers often call on the help of companies which provide such services as banner printing in Cardiff. The singer continues to promote her Eurovision song, titled Bang Bang Bang, in Geneva.
According to Krystal, the music she pays contains aspects of country and folk, but also features elements of “psychedelia”.
