The Cardiff branch of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) is behind the scheme, which is called Y:Cube. A branch of the organisation based in south-west London has already piloted the idea there, where it proved to be quite successful. As a result of this, YMCA Cardiff hopes to repeat that success and provide the city with vital affordable housing choices.
However, before it can take things any further, the YMCA will be required to locate a suitable site for the new housing to be constructed. Its Housing Association’s finance development officer, Mandy Caddy, told Wales Online that:
“Once we have done this we will start to plan the construction of a cluster of new, affordable and sustainable housing as a move-on from our hostels.”
Caddy went on to add that it could also potentially provide housing options for small families, students and others living on low incomes. The YMCA hopes that it can identify a partner organisation to come on board and help the scheme to move forward.
