The statue is called Every Man Remembered and is located on St. Mary Street in the city centre, with the Royal British Legion carrying out the official unveiling.
It has been created not only to mark the Gallipoli centenary, but also as part of the Every Man Remembered campaign launched by the British Legion, which encourages the British public to honour the 1,117,077 Commonwealth citizens killed during this war.
It derives its theme loosely from that of the Unknown Soldier, and is set on a limestone plinth and surrounded by an obelisk of Perspex, with poppies all around it.
Official commemorative events such as this one frequently employ flyer and poster printing in Cardiff and other areas, so that interested locals know when and where they are taking place.
The legion’s area manager for Wales, Phil Jones, said:
“As the national custodian of remembrance, we hope the sculpture will act as a focal point for modern day remembrance during these centenary years.”
The battle of Gallipoli took place over eight months, with the Ottoman Empire as its site. It saw France and Britain undertake a naval assault aimed at winning control of Constantinople, the capital of this empire, and led to widespread casualties.
