The singer-songwriter, Juanita Stein, is currently on tour, and is due to play a gig in Cardiff towards the end of March.
This lead vocalist of the Howling Bells hails from Melbourne in Australia, and grew up playing the guitar. Her early influences included Roy Orbison and Patsy Cline. She gigged informally while at college, forming a group called Waikiki with her brother in 1999 (this later evolved into Howling Bells).
In 2006 in London, the band released a debut LP 'Bell Union' to positive critical reviews but modest sales. Their next album, 'Radio Wars', came out in 2009, reaching No. 55 on the UK charts. They subsequently opened for Coldplay on their Viva la Vida tour and produced a further two albums.
It was then that Stein began to explore her own solo options. She acted as a guest vocalist with Coldplay and The GiveGoods, releasing an LP of self-penned songs, called 'America', in 2017. This was a mix of roots music, pop and electronic sounds. Her album 'Snapshot', which came out in 2020, was said to be inspired by her father's death.
