This move to explore the business potential of Walthamstow is part of an initiative by London Mayor Sadiq Khan to create a true representation of a 24-hour capital city. Chosen to trial a project that aims to boost and support business in its town centre, Waltham Forest will also benefit from improved retail access past 6pm. The Mayor commented:
“By working together to encourage longer opening hours and host innovative events after 6pm, this pilot in Walthamstow will be a real opportunity to develop the ideas that can boost our high streets and help realise our vision for a 24-hour city.”
The pilot will include a host of proposals designed specifically for the high street. Entrepreneurs can benefit from flexible and affordable business premises in the evening or get assistance from a fund to help community and business groups running late events. A campaign called ‘Shop Local Late’ will promote after-6pm shopping in the town centre and an event titled ‘Reclaim your High Street’ will encourage Waltham residents of all ages to get involved.
Campaign organisers can benefit from brochure printing services to advertise events taking place in the area.
Those taking part in the project in Walthamstow will also benefit from step-by-step guides for evening businesses to assist with licencing and night maps for evening shoppers.
The first Night Time Enterprise trial will run from October 2019 through to January 2020.
