East London cinema undergoes revamp

A former cinema based in an East London is being transformed into an all-new venue.

Once a favoured haunt of iconic director Alfred Hitchcock, the art deco-style cinema known as the Walthamstow Granada is now being refurbished to become a second Soho Theatre venue.

London venues like theatres and cinemas will often use poster printing services to create advertising for upcoming attractions in their foyers and outside display areas.

The venerable London location first opened back in 1930 and often hosted concerts, with legendary performers taking the stage such as the Beatles, Duke Ellington, and country great Johnny Cash. Although the venue closed in 2003, residents campaigned strongly on its behalf, citing its place in London’s music history and unique auditorium inspired by art deco.

In 2019, these efforts were rewarded when Waltham Forest Council purchased the property and teamed with Soho Theatre to secure the venue’s future. Renovations being undertaken will see the building able to safely admit about 1,000 people, giving it six times the seating space of the Dean Street site currently used by Soho Theatre in central London. This will also make it among the borough’s largest public buildings in terms of capacity.

With restoration work now well underway and on track, the new venue is set to launch in summer 2022 with a selection of community-orientated events.
