Hillingdon Council project calls out to local artists

Local residents from Hayes, Uxbridge and other districts in Hillingdon are invited to share their artistic abilities in a special council design project for the Annual Summer Reading Challenge.

The challenge was designed back in 1999 to keep children reading through the summer holidays. On July 6, the challenge will return for 2019 at each of the 17 libraries across Hillingdon. Children joining in are issued collectable cards by the libraries known as Starborgs as an incentive. These rewards featuring animals have proven popular but with the challenge reaching its third year, many children now possess a full set.

For detailed designs to attract children’s attention, high quality printing services are important. Last year, the event proved more successful than ever with 9,000 children joining the challenge and 4,000 completing it. Hillingdon’s Cabinet Member for Central Services, Councillor Richard Lewis stated:

“The Starborgs are a big part of that success and we want to keep them fresh and captivating for children. This is a fantastic opportunity for people with artistic flair to use their talents and be part of our ongoing efforts”

Those illustrating Starborgs should aim for colourful designs, animal characters with special powers and an outer space theme. Submissions can be created digitally or hand drawn but must be submitted online before the deadline of May 1.
