Hillingdon Council implements road safety campaign

Hillingdon Council has launched its latest road safety policy with the help of former rower, James Cracknell.

The local authority intends to ensure that nearly £2 million is spent on the road safety project. The installation of CCTV cameras in the vicinity of schools is central to the initiative. James Cracknell OBE, the current president for the London Road Safety Council (LRSC), is supportive of the scheme. Printing services in Hayes could be used to promote local awareness of road safety.

Cracknell confirmed that the cameras are not cheap. However, he is clear that they represent a great deal. Limiting illegal parking near schools should have a positive impact on the health of local children. Councillor Keith Burrows told the Hillingdon & Uxbridge Times:

“It’s a ground-breaking step forward for any council – we are the first council to do this and we look at it as keeping our children safe.”

Councillor Burrows said that he was worried about the safety of older residents too. He stated that other London boroughs were likely to have similar issues as Hillingdon. He praised the involvement of the LRSC. Furthermore, he expressed his gratitude to Cracknell.

Cracknell is now 44 and several years ago, he incurred a brain injury when cycling in the United States. The former rowing champion is keen to work with the LRSC because the organisation does not focus on the needs of one group. The goal of the LRSC is to maximise safety across the board.
