UK cities encouraged to showcase musical achievements

According to a recent report backed by the Government, cities across the UK should select ambassadorial figures to celebrate musical heritage.

The suggestion was made after it was revealed that music tourism added £2.2 billion to the economy in 2012.

The study was carried out by UK Music and VisitBritain, which identified the monetary value of music tourism internationally and in the UK. Visitors were tracked at concerts across the country and at festivals worldwide.

Figures produced in the ‘Wish You Were Here’ report indicated that 6.5 million tourists bought tickets to gigs and paid for accommodation and travel, totalling £1.3 billion. A further £914 million was spent indirectly on refreshments and other items.

Only six per cent of music tourists are from overseas and the groups behind the research believe that more should be done to encourage international visitors. Some cities which have a strong music heritage, like Liverpool, already benefit significantly from music-related tourism. The Beat in the Mersey tour, for example, has recently been launched to promote bands from Merseyside.

A special recommendation was given in the report to establish a key spokesperson for Birmingham, with former Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne thought to be a serious contender.

Whoever is chosen will be called upon to launch a range of events to celebrate the city’s achievements, and the city council may need the help of reliable printing services. South Birmingham Print companies can, for example, provide Posters and Brochures to inform gig-goers and festival attendees.
