Debbie Lakeman, who works in the museum, has said:
“We are really excited at providing this new opportunity for our youngest visitors to engage with the museum. Children and carers will enjoy exploring the buildings and the collection together, so why not come and pay us a visit?”
The adventure is targeted at children who are not yet five. It is intended to capture the imagination of those taking part. If the museum personnel want to get the attention of more parents, they may choose to use full colour printing in South Birmingham to advertise the scheme.
At present, the Friday sessions are being introduced as a trial. Children will be encouraged to find their way along a play trail using a magnifying glass and a torch. There will also be the opportunity to listen to a story, while songs and craft activities are also part of the overall package.
Funding for the innovative project has come from the Arts Council. However, a coffee bar has also lent its support to the scheme by arranging to be open on the Fridays in question. As the programme of activities starts in the middle of the morning and lasts into the middle of the afternoon, some parents might well welcome the fact that they can buy some drinks during lunchtime.
