New cycling scheme kicks off in Birmingham

A new initiative has been launched in Birmingham in an attempt to get residents out on their bikes. It is hoped that the drive may help to provide health boosts, reduce traffic congestion and to cut back on pollution.

The Centro-run scheme, which has been given the title 'Smarter Networks, Smarter Choices', aims to spread the message about the alternative methods of transport that are available while actively encouraging people to consider cycling to work.

It is estimated that drivers in the West Midlands waste as much as £2.3 billion each year on fuel just by sitting in traffic jams and the aim is to reduce this.

Local authorities are planning to target 20,000 residents in a bid to raise awareness of the scheme and will be visiting homes across the region. This could also be supported by printed material, such as Flyers created using digital printing. South Birmingham residents can expect to be visited by a member of the Smarter Networks, Smarter Choices team over the coming weeks.

Peter Cameron, a Centro officer, explained the idea to the Birmingham Mail, saying:

"We’ll be telling people the quickest ways to get to their most frequent destinations by car, public transport, cycling and even walking.

“People who cycle aren’t aware of all the routes in the city - this scheme aims to give them that kind of information and more.”

The scheme will also offer cycle lesson for adults, information on public transport and walking routes.
