Former station to be used as Birmingham restaurant

Sections of a disused railway station are to be made into a subterranean restaurant in Birmingham.

Planning permission has been given to a scheme by which pieces of Snow Hill station will form part of a restaurant near the centre of Birmingham. The redevelopment initiative has been pushed forward with the help of K4 Architects, despite the lack of an occupier ready to move in.

It was necessary to consult with a range of stakeholders before progress could be made. However, it has been predicted that construction work should be completed before the middle of 2017.

When a business occupies the location, it could use a Print company from South Birmingham to promote what it has to offer. Bob Ghosh, the founder at K4 Architects, told the Birmingham Post:

“We spoke to some local engineers about the structure and their response was how efficient they could make the steel frame. However, on talking to GLaSS founder Tim MacFarlane, he said we wouldn't need any steel and the glass walls could support the entire structure.”

GLaSS is based in London, but one of its designs has featured in Manhattan. It has come up with a vision for the Birmingham restaurant which includes a pavilion as an entrance. This could make an imposing impact within a square in the central business district and Amber Real Estate Investments, which owns the site, may benefit.
