College in Worcestershire on prize trail

The Heart of Worcestershire College (HWC) has recently received £5,000 for its work with technology, but now it has the chance of winning further recognition.

HWC’s information and learning technology department, or ILT, officially won a Beacon Award from the Association of Colleges back in November. This was presented at a ceremony hosted in Birmingham.

Now, the college has been featured on one of the shortlists for the TSE FE Awards, in a category that relates to the use of technology in further education. It faces competition from several other institutions of education in a section that has received sponsorship from the Skills Network.

The ILT received the four-figure prize primarily because of its commitment to online teaching. The assessment of the work of students is in part accomplished over the net. Staff could use brochure printers in South Birmingham to highlight the achievements of the college to potential students.

Peter Kilcoyne, the director of the ILT, has said:

“We’re extremely pleased and proud to have won the award for our blended learning programme.”

The final decision of the judges of the TSE FE Awards will be made within a month. It will be based on a range of factors; in part, it will be influenced by looking at how individuals gained backing for their projects within their colleges.
