Campaign launched to clean up South Birmingham bridge

A campaign has been launched to clean up a bridge in South Birmingham after the paintwork was attacked by vandals.

Tom Poole, who lives in Selly Oak, is appealing and offering support to authorities and organisations to help them to restore the town’s railway bridge to its former glory. Tom has contacted the local police force, the council and Network Rail in a bid to get the graffiti removed from the bridge. He has even volunteered to do the job himself.

Tom commented on his campaign, saying:

“It has looked really bad for over a year. They revamped the station just down the track and left the bridge looking like this. Entering from the city on the Bristol Road it’s one of the first you see as you come down on the bus to Selly Oak. They painted it up really nicely some time back, then the kids sprayed their tags all over it.”

Campaigns like this often start with one voice, but they can soon grow into bigger and stronger appeals when the word is spread. Printing companies in South Birmingham, which offer services like flyer printing and poster printing, are in a great position to help Tom ensure his voice heard and to drum up support amongst his fellow residents.

Karen McCarthy, a councillor in Selly Oak, said:

“My understanding is that Network Rail would paint the bridge, but only one flat colour. The local community want the signwriting restored.”
She went on to express her hope that a newly-painted bridge would enhance the Bristol Road.
