Birmingham to host Cricket World Cup matches

The city of Birmingham is set to enjoy a boost to its economy by holding five of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup matches.

According to company EY, the city is set to secure £32.1 million from its involvement in the sporting event. This was outlined in a report it carried out for the England and Wales Cricket Board and took into account a variety of factors from ticket sales and visitor spends on match days to the wider funds gained from transport and hospitality spends of attendees from outside the city.

It also estimated the lasting benefits of the cricket tournament’s international exposure and how it would affect Birmingham. West Midlands Growth Company commercial director, Nicola Hewitt, spoke for the firm that manages Visit Birmingham:

“Sport plays a hugely significant role in drawing record numbers of domestic and international visitors to the West Midlands, boosting the region’s economy.”

Cricket fans from both north and south Birmingham will flock to the city’s Edgbaston Stadium where five games of the Cricket World Cup will be played. The World Cup, that features a Logo Design in red and grey, has even arranged for its second semi-final to be hosted by the city.

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup will be held in England and Wales from May 30 to July 14.
