Potters Bar looks forward to classic operas

In a double bill, Gianni Schicchi and Cavalleria Rusticana are due to be staged by the amateur Southgate Opera company in Potters Bar towards the end of June.

Giacomo Pucinni's sole comedy work, Gianni Schicchi, tells the tale of a lovable rogue. The lead character Gianni is engaged by the relatives of an aristocrat, recently deceased, to guarantee their inheritance of his estate.

But the financially embarrassed Schicchi has his own ideas, a situation further complicated by the fact that his daughter has fallen in love with one of those self-same relatives. Indeed, she sings the noted soprano aria 'O mio babbino caro ('Oh my beloved father').

In Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, Turiddu, just back from military service, learns that his lover Lola has already been betrothed to Alfio, a rich carter. He then seduces Santuzza, but soon tires of her and once again and secretly resumes his tryst with Lola.

In despair at her betrayal, Santuzza seeks vengeance, resulting in tragedy. This popular opera features the delightful orchestral 'Intermezzo', as well as the genuinely uplifting 'Easter Hymn'.

Tickets range in price from £15 to £22. Graphic design can often play an important role in the pre-production delivery of a stage show or theatrical event.

Gianni Schicchi and Cavalleria Rusticana will take place between Thursday, 22 and Saturday, 24 June at Wyllyotts Theatre in Potters Bar.
