The Canadian singer, songwriter and instrumentalist Alison Russell is on tour and will be coming to Oxford towards the end of June.
This Montreal-born polymath survived what could only be described as a difficult childhood. She first came to public attention in 2003 as part of the Canadian roots combo Po Girl. Together with her husband JT Nero, she then went on to found the duo Birds of Chicago in 2012, as well as Our Native Daughters later on too.
Alison released a debut solo LP called 'Outside Child' in 2021. It was nominated three times at the Grammy Awards. These included Best Americana Album, Best American Roots Song, and Best American Roots Performance. It also received a Polaris Music Prize nomination.
She has the distinction of being the first Black performer ever to pick up the Contemporary Roots Album of The Year at the Juno Awards. Indeed, the New York Times listed 'Outside Child' as 2021's #2nd Best Album.
The record itself features contributions from many Nashville-based artists, such as Jamie Dick, Erin Rae, Joe Pisapia and The McCary Sisters, and was produced by Dan Knobler.
